On Monday 9th September our Kōrari Māori Public Health team along with whānau, kaumātua and kaimahi from across te tai tonga will be on their way to Ōtautahi for our Kia Piki Te Ora ki Te Waipounamu collective suicide prevention symposium ‘Haere Tonu”.
The bus leaves early on Monday from Te Tomairangi Marae and will be stopping at rūnanga and key places along the way to pick up whānau and meet with local organisations, whānau and media. The Haere Tonu symposium will take place the next day (Tuesday 10th September which is also World Suicide Prevention day). The symposium itself will consist of key note speakers including Te Whatu Ora, the Mental Health Foundation, Bros For Change and other rangatira in the hinengaro/mental health space. Whānau who attend will also participate in te ao Māori based wānanga in the afternoon including rāranga, mau rākau, tāonga tākaro and waiata. Our rōpū will be keeping you regularly updated with videos and photos from our hīkoi and symposium day.
Our Haere Tonu message to whānau is “Mai I te Pō, ki te Ao Mārama” which relates to coming out of the dark into the light. Haere Tonu is a special collaboration between the four Kia Piki Te Ora (all ages suicide prevention for Māori) sites in Te Waipounamu: Ngā Kete Mātauranga Pounamu, He Waka Tapu, Maataa Waka Ki Te Tau Ihu and Poutini Waiora.
