Ngā Kete and Stroke Aotearoa hosted a free community health event on Thursday 12 March, held in the foyer at Ngā Kete’s head office.
The event focused on raising awareness about stroke prevention while making essential health checks easily accessible for whānau.
Throughout the day, visitors were able to receive free general health checks and learn more about recognising and reducing stroke risk. Health professionals were also available to provide advice and answer questions about maintaining good health and wellbeing.
The Stroke Aotearoa Health Van was stationed on Spey Street offering free blood pressure checks and Atrial fibrillation (AF) checks.
The event also offered HPV self-swabs and immunisations, giving people the opportunity to take care of important aspects of their health without needing to make an appointment.
The day was about bringing healthcare directly into the community and encouraging people to take small but important steps toward preventing serious health conditions such as stroke. By combining practical health services with education and support, the initiative helped empower community members with the knowledge and tools needed to better look after their health.
Community health events like this play an important role in improving access to care, particularly for people who may not regularly visit a doctor.
The event highlighted the value of partnerships between health organisations and community groups in making healthcare more visible, accessible and proactive for everyone.
